Partying options may be limited this New Year’s Eve but that doesn’t mean you can’t welcome in 2021 in style. Here we look at the best styles for some of the more likely New Year’s Eve events you might be attending.
A dinner party
For a proper dinner party, why not go all out? 2020 has provided few opportunities for dressing up but a sophisticated dinner party is your chance to don a dinner jacket and bow tie. If that feels a bit much for dinner at a friends’ house, go for something more casual like a sports jacket and turtleneck. Ties aren’t necessary but accessories such as a pocket square or cufflinks add to the sense of occasion.
The phrase ‘New Year’s Eve Party’ doesn’t feel quite right for what we expect to be doing this year. But if you’re getting together with friends to enjoy a drink and a bite to eat, you can’t go wrong with an Oxford shirt worn over a t-shirt. The shirt can be buttoned or unbuttoned depending on your preference. If you’re going for a layering effect, start with the lightest shade closest to the body and work up to darker hues. A white t-shirt, dress shirt, navy cardigan, and a grey or navy jacket is perfect. For your bottom half, jeans or chinos and a pair of sneakers or any other casual shoes are just fine.
Ok, so your friends and family will spend a lot of their time looking up at the sky, but you still want to make sure you look the part. You’ll be spending time standing outside in the dark and for these moments comfort probably trumps style so keep it simple. A good quality wool overcoat is simple and stylish, and don’t forget a hat and a pair of leather gloves that complement the coat. We’re talking classic, no-frills here. For the inside moments, you’re looking for a casual outfit similar to what you’d wear to an informal gathering. When layering, think about how the outfit will look at all times and make sure the pants you choose can be paired with the t-shirt, dress shirt, and outer layer you choose.
